Onboarding and the Role of the Preceptor

presented by Michelle Webb, DNP, MSN, RN-BC, CHPCA and Julie Tanner, BSN, RN-BC, CHPN

As a preceptor, you wear many hats to facilitate your new hires’ ability to maximize learning efforts to meet a shared goal of providing safe, quality patient care. You are their teacher, socializer, role model, competency validator, facilitator and the nurse who guides them on their path to future success. You are their voice. Carrying all these roles is complicated and being adaptable to the constant variances within your organization and creating an onboarding platform individualized to the diversity of incoming new hires is the art to success. This activity is designed to facilitate a sound on-boarding process through exploration of evidenced-based techniques and resources to support the preceptee’s autonomy in their decision-making development and progression to independence in their position. Using a case-based approach, our faculty will link the art of being a preceptor to the science of successful on-boarding of early career RN practice-level nurses to palliative nursing practice.
