Growing Cultural Humility for More Equitable and Compassionate Practice

Cultural humility requires mindful self-awareness and perspective-taking without shame; skills are often not taught. Cultural and values based turmoil heightens the impact of our clinical interactions and outcomes. Self-awareness without shame and the ability to do perspective-taking enhances our clinical competence and shared experiences. This activity is designed to increase the learner’s knowledge and awareness of cultural humility & the significant impact on outcomes in caregiving. Participants will be asked to explore their individual implicit biases & preferences that impact clinical practice. Learners will be challenged to analyze their individual implicit biases and preferences to avoid shame and isolation and normalize human response to differences without excusing those responses. We will be tasked to consider our areas of preferences, biases, and to practice perspective-taking that will deepen our ability to show up well for ourselves first, so we can show up well for others.
