APRN Learning Pediatric Patients on Home Ventilatory Support

Amy Haskamp, MSN, RN, PCNS-BC, CHPPN, CPON

A family’s decision to pursue or decline long-term ventilation for their child with life-limiting conditions is often complex and overwhelming. Healthcare providers have a responsibility to ensure families understand their options and assist in guiding them through these complicated decisions. We will discuss a pediatric palliative care team’s efforts in working with pediatric patients and their families who have been recommended to receive long-term home ventilator support. We will examine components of shared decision-making, the clinical and family perspectives of exploring long-term home ventilator support, as well as clinical experiences.
