Pain management in palliative care settings will require non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches. Opioids remain the foundation for pharmacologic management of pain in those with serious illness. Use of opioids is complicated by knowledge deficits, stigma, and access issues – for professionals, patients, their loved ones, and the public. This course includes key facts to guide safe and effective pain management for nurses who administer and/or prescribe opioids to those with serious illness.
