LGBTQ+ Patients and Caregivers: Context and Considerations
It is the expectation of nursing practice that nurses provide care with “compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and unique attributes for every person”. The purpose of this activity is to review essential information related to LGBTQ+ competencies for hospice and palliative care nursing practice including: the historical context LGBTQ+ individuals and groups in the United States; current terminology and definitions; social determinants of health and health disparities that impact LGBTQ+ individuals’ end-of-life outcomes; recent empirical research on the perspectives and experiences of LGBTQ+ palliative and hospice patients and family caregivers; and factors influencing hospice and palliative care providers’ attitudes and opinions. Implications for best practices are discussed.
