Advance Care Planning in the Face of the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has radically altered the delivery of healthcare, especially care delivered in nursing homes. Restrictions on visitation and potentially rapid changes in resident/patient conditions underscore the importance of proactive discussion of patient/family goals and preferences for treatment. However, several challenges must be addressed to ensure access to effective advance care planning in this setting. The purpose of this educational offering is to describe the effects of the pandemic on ACP in nursing homes and describe strategies for enhancing ACP under these conditions.
