Facilitating Ventilator Discontinuation in Rural Long-Term Care: A Case-Based Examination of Interprofessional Collab

Prolonged mechanical ventilation in rural long-term care (LTC) settings presents complex clinical, ethical, and logistical challenges for care teams, residents, and families. This recorded webinar explores the current landscape of ventilator use in rural LTC and the profound impact of ventilator discontinuation on all involved.

Through a case-based approach, participants will examine real-world examples of interprofessional collaboration among palliative care consultants, hospice teams, LTC staff, and family caregivers. The session highlights both the facilitators and barriers to coordinated care in resource-limited rural environments, with particular attention to communication, role clarity, and access to specialty support.

Drawing on successful case studies, this webinar offers practical, actionable strategies to improve the process of ventilator discontinuation. Participants will leave better equipped to implement thoughtful, patient-centered changes in practice that support quality end-of-life care in rural LTC settings.
